The Poetic Game by Michael E. Quigg - combining soccer and poetry

I've wondered

who a co-worker

happened to love

on exactly...

let's see now,

one, two.. three...

zero occasions

All I care about

is that they

do their share

What the hell

else is there?

I don't understand

what it is

that you are

afraid of

What

terrible

outcome

is keeping you

up at night?

I don't understand

the fear

the hate

I don't understand

the venom

I think

the reason

this is such

a big deal

isn't just because

a gay man

is playing

a professional sport

Sport

and

gay athletes

share a birthday

It's a big deal

because now

that we know

he's gay,

he can be

nothing else

Because

we demand

to know how

this will

"affect"

his teammates

Because

so many

simply can not

grasp

that it doesn't

Because we

still

do not

understand

that all of

our hearts

beat

together

Because

we

refuse

to accept

that

love

is all that

matters

But the

only reason

this should

be a big deal,

is because

courage

and

bravery

are things

to be

celebrated

This, I understand
